הדיווח הבא שונה מהרגיל. זה אינו דיווח על טורניר אחד, אלא על מספר טורנירים שנערכו באותו המקום, לאורך שלושה ימים. זה ההבדל הראשון.

טוב, אז הנה הדיווח על פרו-טור ניו-אורלינס.
(את ההערות הצדדיות אני אכתוב בעברית, ואת הדיווחי משחקים עצמם באנגלית - הרבה יותר קל ככה)

לפני שלושה חודשים ניצחתי בפרו-טור-קוואליפייר לניו-אורלינס. פרו-טור (Pro-tour) למי שלא יודע, הוא טורניר גדול מאד (בסביבות ה- 400 איש) שנערך מדי חודש-חודשיים במקום כלשהו בעולם. המילה פרו היא קיצור של Proffesional - מקצוען, וה tour בגלל שבכל פעם הוא נערך במקום אחר. כדי להשתתף בטורניר הזה, צריך לנצח ב Pro tour qualifier (בקיצור ptq) ואז מקבלים הזמנה אליו. גם מי שיש ברשותו נקודות מקצוענות (Pro points) רבות יכול להשתתף בטורניר מבלי לנצח קודם ב Ptq (אבל בשביל זה אתה צריך קודם לנצח, או להגיע לדירוג גבוה מאד בפרו-טור).
לפרו-טור יש הרבה מאד יוקרה, והפרסים שם בהתאם. מקום ראשון זוכה ב- 30,000 דולאר, מקום שני 20,000 וכו... עד למקום 64, שזוכה ב- 500 דולאר. למי שכבר מתחיל להתלהב, רצוי לזכור שמשחקים שם כל השמות הגדולים של מאג'יק, ובעצם - טובי השחקנים בעולם. מספיק ששחקן יגיע למקום ה- 64 כדי לזכות בהערכה לא קטנה.
כתוצאה מהנצחון שלי בptq זכיתי בהזמנה לPt, והנחה של 250$ בטיסה לשם. סוכן הנסיעות שלי, שהומלץ לי ע"י אוריאן ואלן (נציגי Wizards בארץ) עשה עבודה מצויינת. אני הייתי בצבא כל הזמן, והוא זה שארגן עבורי את כל הטיסות, המלון ומשלוח הכרטיסים. העברתי אותו בתשעת מדורי הגהנום עד שהוא הצליח לתפוס אותי בטלפון והייתי רוצה להודות לו כאן על כל הסבלנות והמאמץ שהפגין עבורי.

לפני מספר שבועות כתבתי כאן כתבה קצרה על סוגי החבילות הנפוצים באקסטנדד. כתבה זו היתה מבוססת בחלקה הגדול על החבילות שהשתתפו באליפות העולם באקסטנדד. לפיה גם יצרתי לי את חבילת ה שני-תורות-בום. חבילה לבנה-שחורה, שמבוססת על Mass-destrucion, Phyrexian arena ו Desolation angel כאמצעי עיקרי לנצחון. החבילה עבדה טוב נגד חבילות ירוקות, שפגיעות במיוחד לWrath of God, אבל נפלה בגדול כנגד חבילות שליטה - Forbidian, Oath, Turbo-land. לצערי, מכיוון שביליתי את רוב הזמן בצבא, לא יכולתי להתאמן כל כך נגד חבילות אלו, וגיליתי את הפגם המכריע הנ"ל של החבילה רק ברגע האחרון, שלושה ימים לפני הטיסה.
בצר לי, התקשרתי לאור שפר, שהציע לי מיד חבילה שונה - Pox. (עם רקורד של 4 נצחונות ו2 הפסדים באליפות העולם, ע"י דני יוסף).
דני נידב לי, בעצם, את כל הקלפים לחבילה (מחווה נדיבה ביותר) ולימד אותי איך לשחק איתה באפקטיביות.

לדני ולאור היו רעיונות שונים ווריאציות שונות לחבילה, ואני הייתי צריך להחליט מה לכלול בה בסוף. אחת מהברירות היתה להחליף את הIdols ב Ensnaring Bridge ולהפוך את החבילה לחבילת שליטה. החלטתי כנגד זה, בעיקר משום שכל חבילה התקפתית יעילה כוללת 3-4 דרכים להרוס Artifacts - וכל מה שהיא צריכה לעשות זה לצבור יצורים, להרוס את הגשר, ולתקוף אותי דרך התהום שנוצרה.
הגירסה הזו של החבילה אמורה לנצח Forbidian, Oath, Turbo-land ע"י התקפה אגרסיבית על היד שלהם (12 לחשים שזורקים קלפים מהיד) ו Nether Spirit, Idol, Cursed Scroll שנגדם הן לא יכולות לעשות הרבה. Pox גם מכביד עליהן מאד ומונע מהן להגשים את תוכנית המשחק שלהן.
לחבילה יש נטיה להפסיד לחבילות ירוקות, אבל לאחר הסייד-בורד היא אמורה לקטול אותן. נגד White-Weenie היא אמורה לנצח בד"כ. נגד Sligh היא מנצחת 50%, ואחרי הסיידבורד - 70%.

עם החבילה הזו עליתי על המטוס לניו-יורק, מרוצה ומסופק, וביליתי איתה 11 שעות מאושרות באוויר. (ראיתי את הסרט לארה קרופט במטוס. חבל שאי אפשר לירות במפיק)
ביום רביעי בבוקר הגעתי לניו-יורק ומשם תפסתי מטוס לניו-אורלינס, אליה הגעתי ב10 בבוקר. מונית הביאה אותי למלון, שם התקלחתי התנקיתי, ויצאתי להסתובב בעיר הג'ז והפסטיבלים.
טוב, האמת היא שלא נערך אף פסטיבל בזמן שהייתי שם, והמקום היחיד ששמעתי בו ג'ז היה בטיילת. כל קבצן שם קונה לעצמו סקסופון, ומנסה לקבל כסף בנגינה עליו. ת'כלס, היו שם כמה שהייתי משלם להם כדי שלא ינגנו עליו - אבל אתה לא אומר את זה לבן-אדם עצבני, שחור, ובגובה (ורוחב!) שני מטר.
ביום הראשון סתם הסתובבתי בכל העיר. ראיתי את 'מונטי פייטון והגביע הקדוש' ובכך השלמתי את המחדל הכאוב שבהווייתי (לא ראיתי אותו עד אז ונמאס לי שאנשים מעירים לי על זה).
אכלתי במק-דולנדס. מילת אזהרה : אם אתם הולכים לאכול במסעדת המבורגרים בארצות הברית, רצוי שתדעו שהמבורגר אצלם זה כמו המבורגר-ילדים אצלנו. אני הזמנתי המבורגר וקיבלתי משהו שנראה יותר כמו חטיף בשר בלחמניה. ההמבורגר שלנו נקרא אצלם ביג-מק. לידיעתכם.
בערב הלכתי למלון בו מתקיימים מפגשי השחקנים, בין 7 בערב ל- 7 בבוקר.
היו שם בסה"כ 20 איש, שבחלקם הגדול היו פשוט... ערסים!
כן, גם שם יש כאלה!
אבל הם היו הגרסה האמריקאית לערסים, מה שאומר שהם היו שמנים, מכוערים, והפנים שלהם היו מלאות בפירסינג וחצ'קונים. הם כבר היו שיכורים למחצה, והתרוצצו ורדפו זה אחרי זה מסביב לשולחן, בו 2 חברים שלהם התחילו הרגע לשחק. אני מעיף מבט בשולחן :
Player A is playing a Forbidian deck, and player B is playing Three-deuce ( a 3 colors deck with efficient creatures like Goblin Fanatic and Goblin Legionnaire, River Boa, Spectral Lynx, etc...) Player A has just played a Shadowmage, has a Powder Keg with 1 counter in play, and is tapped out. Player B has a Plateau and a Taiga, a Goblin Legionnaire in play and has in hand : Goblin Fanatic, 2 incinirate, 1 rancor and Seal of Cleansing. He must kill the Shadowmage before the other player starts attacking. You just don't let a shadowmage roam free if you can prevent it! He can either cast incinirate on the mage, or cast the Fanatic and blow both the Legionnaire and the Fanatic to kill the mage.
He casts Rancor on the Goblin Legionnaire, and says Go. The other player obiously blows the Keg, and starts attacking with the Shadowmage, gaining cards to use against the other player.
אחרי התצוגה המוזרה הזאת, אני מרגיש קצת יותר טוב. אם אלה המקצוענים של הטורניר, אולי יש לי סיכוי להגיע למקום מכובד שם.
אני סוטה הצידה, למקום שבו אנשים יותר נורמלים משחקים. אחד מהם, מייק משיקגו, מציע לי דראפט של אחד על אחד בשביל הקלפים (לשנינו אין את הכסף להמר על המשחקים). הוא טוען שהוא לא מוצלח במיוחד בדראפט, ואני ישר חושד שהוא אחד מאלה שמנסים לקפוץ על שחקנים מתחילים ותמימים ולכתוש אותם.
יאללה, אני הולך על זה.
בחירה ראשונה בבוסטר הראשון אני לוקח Aboshan, Cephalid Emperror פויל. אחרי הדראפט הוא מגלה לי שהוא לקח Roar of the Wurm פויל. הוא הולך על ירוק, ואני על כחול. הוא אוסף לו 4 Rabid elephants (אני לוקח את החמישי - רק כדי שהוא לא יקבל אותו) ואני אוסף קוטלי יצורים משחור, Kirtar's Desire מלבן וקאונטרים מכחול. הדראפט עצמו מהנה מאד. כל אחד מאיתנו יודע מה השני לוקח (מלבד הקלף ראשון בכל בוסטר) ומכין את עצמו. הוא אוסף את ה Aven Archer (שתי מנות לבנות זה יותר מדי לחבילה שלי) ואני בתגובה לוקח את ה Execute. אף אחד מאתנו לא לוקח אדום - הצבע החלש ביותר באותו דראפט. אנחנו מסכמים לשחק שלושה משחקים מתוך חמישה. בכל המשחקים Aboshan מגיע - מאוחר מאד, בד"כ, בגלל שה Islands שלי לא סובלים אותי ולא מוכנים להגיע אלי (הצבע הראשי שלי - ובשני משחקים אין לי אפילו Island אחד ב7 התורות הראשונים). אני מצליח להגן על עצמי עד שהוא מגיע... ואז המשחק נגמר.
ניצחתי בשלושה משחקים ואני מודה לו, אוסף את הקלפים של שנינו וממשיך הלאה. אני מצטרף לקבוצה של שחקנים מדנמרק, ומשוחח איתם על הפרו-טור ואילו חבילות כדאי לשחק בו. אנחנו צוחקים על הערסים (שכבר עזבו את האולם והלכו להשתכר לגמרי) ואז מתחלקים לזוגות ומשחקים בשביל הכיף. אני משחק כנגד בחור בשם ביירון, מהוואי. הוא משחק, כמובן, ב Pox!
החבילה שלו זהה לשלי כמו שתי טיפות מים והוא מתוודה שבדיוק כמוני, גם הוא שונא חבילות Oath ו Turbo land. אני מתחיל להבין שאני צריך להתכונן ל Mirror Match. הוא מנצח במשחק אחד, ואני מנצח בשני. מייק חוזר באותו שלב ואני משחק גם נגדו. הוא משחק בחבילת Three-deuce אבל מגירסה מיוחדת במינה. כחול-לבן-שחור, עם Meddling mages, Spectral Lynx, Shadowmage Infiltrator - ובלי קאונטרים. יש לו Seals of Cleansing ו Swords... ובלי קאונטרים.
הוא מנצח משחק אחד ואני מנצח בשני. החבילה, דרך אגב, מתגלה במפתיע כטובה בפרו-טור. הוא הצליח לעלות איתה ליום השני ולהגיע למקום 120 וקצת. למען האמת נראה לי שהתוצאה הזאת היא בעיקר מזל, כי החבילה לא תוכננה היטב, לדעתי. אבל היי- הוא זה שהגיע ליום השני!
בשלב הזה, הערסים חזרו שיכורים לגמרי. אחד מהם התחיל לספר בקולי קולות איך הוא נהנה להרביץ לחברה שלו, כשכל השאר מתפקעים מצחוק, ואני החלטתי שהגיע הזמן לחזור למלון (השעה - 11 בלילה).
עצה קטנה : -=אל=- תלכו לבד ברחובות בניו-אורלינס בשעת לילה מאוחרת. הרגשתי ממש ערום בלי הגלילון שלי. יותר מדי אנשים נועצים בך מבטים והייתי קרוב מאד להשדד ע"י מסומם אחד. לא נעים.

ביום חמישי יצאתי לשיט על המיסיסיפי, לביקור בגן החיות ובאקווריום (מומלץ בחום!). בערב הלכתי להירשם באודיטוריום המוניציפלי, בו נערך הטורניר. (200 מטר מהמלון שלי ואני נהנה ללכת ברגל - אבל בערב אתה לוקח מונית בכל מקרה. הסיבוב היחיד שלי ברגל בשעת החשיכה הספיק לי)
היו שם מאות שחקנים בהמתנה להרשמה, ורובם ככולם שיחקו בחבילות אקסטנדד או בדראפט. מייק וביירון שיחקו בדראפט, כך שמצאתי את עצמי לבד. נרשמתי במהירות והלכתי לאסוף אנשים לדראפט. מצאתי רק עוד שלושה, כך שעשינו דראפט של 4 שחקנים. כאן היתה פשלה גדולה. מצאתי בן אדם אחד, ואז עוד שניים. השניים האחרים חשבו שאנחנו מציעים דראפט קבוצתי - כלומר שנינו נגד שניהם. הם סיכמו מראש איזה צבעים הם יקחו, כדי שלא לעלות אחד על השני. אני והבחור האחר (מדרום-אפריקה), לעומת זאת, לא סיכמנו שום דבר והתחככנו בצבעים שלנו, כך שמדי פעם הוא לקח דברים שאני הייתי יכול להשתמש בהם, והוא לא היה צריך עד כדי כך.
הבעיה היחידה היא, שהם הבינו שאנחנו לא קבוצה רק אחרי שכבר עשינו את הדראפט - ועכשיו כל מה שנשאר זה - לשחק!
החבילה שלי ירוקה-שחורה, עם הרבה יצורים 2/1 עבור 2 מנות, zombie assasin*3, Morbid Hunger*2, a Gorilla Titan, Rabid Elephant etc...
Round 1 : Jacob from Milwouky - playing a red-green deck, based on red and green fast critters and a few copies of Reckless Charge. I'm playing first, taking a mulligan, and win. Second game - no mulligan, I lose. Third game - taking a mulligan and onward to the win.

Round 2 : Ben (don't know where from). Playing a blue-white VERY defensive deck. First game - I'm taking a Mulligan and win. Second game - no mulligan, he wins. Third game - a mulligan - I win.
See a pattern?

Turns out my 'partner' lost against both of them, so I'm the winner. I'm taking all of the cards and wish them good luck in the pro-tour. They let me go sullenly.

אוקי, אני מתחיל להיות עצבני. משהו כאן לא בסדר. לא יכול להיות שאני מנצח 2 חבר'ה מקצוענים ששיתפו פעולה זה עם זה בדראפט - ועוד אחרי מוליגן! יש שם לדבר הזה. הוא נקרא : פרס ניחומים. יכול להיות שמישהו מגבוה מנסה לפצות אותי מראש על ההפסד הקרב ובא בפרו-טור?
אין הרבה טעם במחשבות כאלה, לטוב או לרע, ואני חוזר למלון ומנסה לתפוס קצת שינה לפני הפרו-טור.

אני מגיע ב- 8 בבוקר לזירת הטורניר, מצוייד בחולצת המשתתף שלי והרבה בטחון עצמי. תוך זמן קצר אנחנו מחולקים לזוגות, והטורניר מתחיל!
הערה : כדי לעלות ליום השני, צריך 13 נקודות. כלומר, לפחות 4 נצחונות ותיקו.

Round 1 : Norichika Murakami - Japan.
His deck is a mono-blue Forbidian deck, with Gush. I choose to go first, have only 1 land in my hand, and take a mulligan (yeah! I'm gonna win! :> ). Only 1 land again. I choose to take the risk, put it down and cast a Duress. That was the last spell I cast that game, and until he dropped his Masticore and second Ophidian, I got no second land. My Nether Spirit, which I discarded to the graveyard after having 8 cards in hand, protected me for a few turns, but to no avail.
Game 2 : Duress! Verdict! Chimeric Idol (getting countered)! POX! POX! POX! POX! He's down to 3 life, his mouth wide open, no cards in hand and only 2 lands on the table. I slam down a Chimeric Idol and that's game.
Game 3 : A very balanced game. I bring into play 2 scrolls on the start, empty my hand as much as I can and cast Pox. I start relying on chances of 1/2 and 2/3 just so that I can hurt him with the Scroll - very very slowly. He summons a Masticore, which I try to Edict on his turn. The Edict gets countered, and on my turn I cast another. Masticore's dead. The Ophidian that hits play the turn after gets swallowed in my Spinning Darkness, and the way is open for my scrolls to finish him.

We had lots of fun playing those games, and laughed alot at the Pox quartet. He made no mistakes that I could discern, and neither did I. I think I saw his picture somewhere in the Sideboard magazine, so my rating probably jumped up a little bit when I beat him.

Round 2 : Matied Di Tomaso - Italy.
Playing a Three-Deuce with Call of the Herd.
Game 1 : He's playing first, and tears me apart with his small, fast creatures. That was only to be expected, without my sb.
Game 2 : I sideboard in my 3 Perish, 3 Massacares. I get a Perish and a Massacare in my openning hand, and there's not much he can actually do about that.
Game 3 : He's playing first, casting a Goblin Fanatic. Next turn, he casts a Rancor on it. I Funeral Charm it in response, and he's casting Wax on it - and attacks me with a 7/2 critter on the second turn. Next turn I'm bringing an Idol into play. He enchants his Fanatic beastie with another Rancor, and attacks. I have to sacrifice my Idol to save my ass, but 2 points of damage still come through. Now he casts 2 Cursed Scrolls. There is a Seal of Cleansing, 2 Rancors and 2 Swords to Plowshares in his hand. At a certain point in the game I make a very stupid mistake, Verdicting him instead of me. That, most probably, decided the game. (Me dead)

Round 3 : Tim Daniger.
Tim is playing a black-white very agressive deck. The games go accordingly.
Game 1 : First turn Unmask to discard my Idol. Casting Sacromancy. Next turn he slams down an Ancient Tomb and summons a Priest of Gix - using it to bring a Phyrexian Negator beastie into play. Pox has absulutly nothing to do against that kind of thing! I Edict him once, and then the Negator tramples me to oblivion.
Game 2 : First turn Duress on me, Mox diamond and Sacromancy. Second turn - Ancient Tomb and Phyrexian Negator. Third turn Skittering Horror. I manage to use a scroll on the Negator. He sacrifices a land and the Sacromancy enchantment and keeps on beating me to the ground. A turn later, it's Game Over.
The whole match was over in less than 10 minutes.

That's 2 losses so far. If I win all 4 games ahead, I'll still not make top 8, but at least I'll get into second day. Alas, that was not to be...

Round 4 : Froelich Eric - Washington D.C.
Eric is playing Donate-Illusions, against which I am very happy to play, as Pox should rip that kind of deck apart. With 12 discard spells, 6 enchantment killers, and a way to gain life (verdict), Pox should be near invincible against Donate-illusions.
Game 1 : I cast a Duress first turn. I remove a Medallion from his hand... Don't get Verdict... Don't get anything... he's actually casting the Illusions and Donates with no resistance on my side. Lady Luck just screwed me up!
Game 2 : I'm sideboarding in all the artifact/enchantment destruction in the sideboard. He's sideboarding out the entire Illusions-Donate combo, and sideboards in Ophidians and Morphlings. I have almost no creature destruction left in the deck, and take a big-time loss.

Round 5 : Chris Senhouse - Boston.
Chris is playing a very old deck, which was reborn in this tourney. Reanimator. The original version, a very long time ago, consisted on Buried Alive, Ashen Ghouls, Nether Spirits and Krovikan Horrors, as well as a few big creatures and Animate dead. The version which many played in this tourney consisted of Entomb, 4 vampiric tutors to ensure consistency, Reanimate as a means to bring creatures back into play, Squee and Krovikan Horrors, and Zombie Infestation.
Pox should have a fairly balanced match against this one, because Pox kills the large creature reanimated. Also, the Furnace from the sideboard should help.
Should, I say. Should.
Game 1 : Chris is a very pleasant fellow to play against, and we are having fun through the match. He beats me like a dog in game 1, simply because I can't deal with his Squee and krovikan horror coming back to his hand right after he creates his Zombie token.
Game 2 : I beat him like a dog.
Game 3 : He brings Crosis into play. Luckily, I have a Pox. And, well, that's about all I have.

And that's where I decided to quit the pro-tour (not much reason to go on) and join the side-events.

About the side events :
During the entire 3 days of the pro-tour, there had been side-events. There were over 40 drafts, at least 6 Sealed deck tournies and a couple of extended / t2 tourneys. There wasn't a minute when somebody wasn't having a draft or some kind of tourney. Most were pretty small - at most 20 people. Others (mostly the sealed decks) had almost a 100 people participating.

I joined a sealed deck tourney, and got my funniest deck ever. The only usable colors were red and black, and the bombs were a Vampiric Dragon, Mystic Enforcer and Nut Collector. I had -=3=- Reckless Charge, and that made up my mind for me. I played red/black Sligh :>
I put in all the weenies I had in red and black. My finishers were 2 Scorching Flames and a Liquid Fire. I also put in the Vampiric Dragon, just in case I reach 8 mana. It sucked - but it was funny, and the other colors were so ridiculous I had no other choice.

Round 1 : Michael Chapel - North Carolina.
Game 1 : Both of us started slow. I summoned a Ember Beast, and a Dirty Wererat a few turns later. I cast Reckless Charge on both of them and attack for 11 damage. A turn later I Scorching Flamed him, cast another Reckless charge and attack through his only blocker.
Game 2 : The game actually lasted till I had 10 mana to cast the Scorching flames again from the graveyard and finish what little remaining life he had.

Round 2 : Tony Huino - Texas.
Game 1 : Tony is playing a blue-green deck with 2-3 Werebears, Springing Tigers and blue drawers, which give him Threshold pretty fast. I cast a Dwarven Grunt and Ember Beast and begin Recklessly assaulting him. He summons 2 Werebears and starts pushing himself towards Threshold. I manage to kill one of them with Afflict and force him to block with the other as a last ditch effort to save himself. The Werebear dies, and so does its owner, a turn later.
Game 2 : I don't manage to swarm him with creatures in the start, and his creatures reach Threshold extremely fast through a Cephallid Broker. Werebears, Springing Tiger and Krosan Avenger rape me painfully.
Game 3 : A 3rd turn Dusk Imp. 2 Reckless Charges on 4th turn (one from the graveyard). That's 8 damage. A turn later - do it again. That's 16 damage. Scorching flames for GAME.

Round 3 : Ben Stark - Florida.
Game 1 : Ben is playing a fast green/white deck. I get stuck with only mountains, after a mulligan. He, on the other hand, has no trouble whatsoever. He summons a Mongrel, a Werebear, a Nantucko Disciple - and I cast an Ember Beast. That's game.
Game 2 : I have a good start with a Mad Dog, a Filthy Cur and 2 Reckless Assault. I manage to get him down to 5 life, after lots of chump blocking and a Wild Mongrel that saves him. As soon as I run out of air, he rushes inward with -=his=- dogs and finishes me. (I don't think I like Patrol Hounds)

Round 4 : Herzog Cameron - Portland.
His deck was too good, and he beat me in about 10 minutes. We went out for a sandwich and had a pleasant walk and conversation, but he still kicked me out of the tourney (no point in going on. 2 losses means you don't get to top 8, and that means no prizes).
Since the time was close to 24:00, I catched a cab back to my hotel. I was too tired to shower - I just set my alarm clock to 7am, fell on the bed and lost conciousness for 6 hours.


SECOND DAY - SATURDAY
I join the Ptq for Pro Tour San-Diego. The format is sealed deck Odyssey. I open the pack, and my sight fails me. I'm playing black/green, with a Dirty Wererat or two, and my win card is... Nut Collector!
Now, don't take me wrong - Nut collector is a very fine card... but even in Sealed it isn't that strong, since it's just a 1/1 critter that can easily be destroyed by any red/black spell. Still, I'm trying to make the best of it, put on a smile and go ahead to meet my first opponent for the day.

Round 1 : Josh Fleisch - California.
Game 1 : Josh is playing white/blue/black recurse deck. He's using Second Thoughts and cantrips, and taking them back to his hand with Scrivner. I manage to reach Threshold with 2 Dirty Wererats in play, as well as a Childhood Horror. He's Second Thoughting one of them, and I remove the Thoughts from his graveyard, using my Steamclaw, and cast a Nut Collector. He's down to 8 life, with no critter in play, and I'm at 16. I ask him jokingly if he got any Wrath of God. He just smiles back, taps 6 lands, and casts a Kirtar's Wrath!
So, now he has 2 spirit tokens in play, that attack every turn. I get absulutely nothing, while he receives a Scrivner which allows him to cast a Predict again. When I'm down to 8, I get a Werebear into play. A turn later, I attack with it and cast a Sylvan Might twice on it for the win.
Only - he has Repel in his hand, and I concede.
Game 2 : Both of us have a fast start with Wild Mongrel on my side and a Patrol Hound on his. I waste a Demise on the Hound (big, dumb mistake. I had more critter destruction in hand, though) and start attacking with the Mongrel. He's summoning Aven Windreader, and a turn later - Childhood Horror. With the blue in his deck, he reaches Threshold a short time later, and his flyers beat me big time.
Note : In both games, Last Rites was a very helpful card. I got rid of 2 lands, for 2 of the strongest cards in his hand (Wrath in 2nd game).

Round 2 : Michael Tageart - Dallas.
Game 1 : Michael is playing a red/blue/green deck. He summons a turn 2 Mongrel, turn 3 Mongrel, discards a Roar of the Wurm from his hand, 4th turn Wurm. I manage to cast a Wererat... and that's about it.
game 2 : This game is a long one. He summons Kamahl (Gidi's way to glory :> ) but I manage to kill it with Morbid Hunger (he's smart - he doesn't attack with it, 'cause he knows it'll just meet a Second Thoughts). Eventually I beat him with my critters.
Game 3 : He gets stuck with 4 mountains, while I just rush through him with a great openning hand.

Round 3 : Paul Donald - Lousiana.
I don't even remember how, but I lost twice.
That's the end of -=that=- tourney for me.

Off I am to another Sealed tourney! (I never tire! :> )

This time I get DA DECK. 2 Wild Mongrels, 2 Mystic Zealot, Nomad Decoy, Healer, Gorila Titan, Ivy Elemental, Crashing Centaur, 2 Patrol Hound, 2 Thermal Blasts... I make myself a green/white/red deck, with only 2 Thermal Blasts for red, and green/white for the beats.

Round 1 : Sadeh Douglas - Houston.
Game 1 : I bring into play all my creatures - 2 Zealots, Soulcatcher, Krosan Archer, Wild Mongrel and Charging Centaur. He manages to defend himself quite well with Nomad Decoy, Angelic Wall and a few creatures. But it's not nearly enough, and my creatures are just better than his.
Game 2 : I only get 2 lands, and he busts my a$$ with 2 Hounds, a Zealot and a Wererat.
Game 3 : I lay down 5 lands and summon a Gorila Titan - 8/8. He attacks with his 2 critters, and I block one with the Gorila and the Crypt Creeper with my Pilgrim of Justice. He casts a Patriarch's desire on the Pilgrim. The Gorila shrinks down to a 4/4 banana, and the next time it attacks, he blocks it with a Zealot and casts Muscle Burst. I cast a Burst too - and he'l left without any critters. That's pretty much it.

Round 2 : Kim Sommerset - Norway. Kim is playing a red/green/white deck with Zealots, Gorilas, and Chainflingers.
Game 1 : Our decks are pretty similiar, but mine is more agressive - and I also manage to slam down my Gorila in both games, with no card in the graveyard. To his benefit, I must say that the games didn't end as soon as that. I knew he had a couple of Thermal Blasts and Muscle Bursts, and I was too scared to attack recklessly without defending my Gorila or Elemental. But slow and steady - that's the way for my fatties. In the end they crush him.

Round 3 : Kevin Dolpeare - Alabama.
Kevin is playing a red/white deck. I'm too fast for him, but he manages to cast a Sandstone Deadfall in both games. In the first game he destroys a Muscle bursted Zealot. In the second he kills my 8/8 Gorila. In both games I practically force him into using it, as he has to sacrifice 2 lands to use it, and that slows him down -=alot=-. Then I cast some other fatty, and crush him down.

Round 4 : Moraes Claudio - Brazil.
Game 1 : He manages to stop my initial creature rush with cards like Angelic Wall, Ghastly Demise and Shelter. There's lots of thinking in this game, as he has a Demise in hand (took it back with a Scrivner) and I have Shelter, and we both try to find a way to force the other to use his card first. He then enchants his land with Caustic Tar which finishes the game.
Game 2 : I sideboard in my Druid Lyrists (he also has Screams of the Damned in his deck. That's scary). I start hard with Soulcatcher, Mongrel and a Nentucko Teacher. He can't block without getting hurt, and every time one of his flyers dies, the Soulcatcher grows up a level. He can't handle my Nentucko-powered creatures, and that's game.
Game 3 : A second turn Soulcatcher, 5th turn Gorila, no cards in the graveyard. He makes me discard a card to the graveyard, then Demises my Gorila. I Muscle Burst it in response. He Kirtar Desires it, and I shelter it from white. (remember, you can do it even after he cast the enchantment. A critter that gains pro-color, and has an ehcnantment of that color on it, just shrugs off the enchantment!) He calls a judge to verify it, and then just sits there with a long face, while my Nentucko-power-ranger-trampling-Gorila beats him like a big, squishy banana.

Yeah! I won my first Odyssey sealed! Won 14 boosters (got a finkel :> )

I don't like Sealed Odyssey, though, and that's because of a very simple reason : there are too many bombs.
In most other sets, the bomb cards - the ones that win you the game - are rares. That means that in a 100 people sealed, 10 people will get that one bomb rare. In Odyssey, the real bombs are commons, or at most uncommons. (as a testament to that, when drafting Odyssey, a good deck has almost no rares in it)
I'm talking about cards like Wild Mongrel, Werebear, Krosn Archer, Mystic Zealot, Shelter, Second Thoughts, Dirty Wererat, Ghastly Demise. Some other cards are on the brink as well - Aven Windreader is a strong, flying beast for a reasonale price and Firebolt is 2 creature destruction for 1 card in the weenie enviroment. Most of the bomb commons, though, are on the white/green side, and if a player gets 2 of each of those, there's not much the other player can do.
So, in a 100 people draft, 20-30 people will get those bomb commons (and probably get more than 1 of each). That means that 70% of the players automatically have significantly less chance to win against those 30%.
And -=that=-'s why I don't like Sealed Odyssey.


Onwards, to Odyssey Draft!

The player to the right of me didn't really know what he wanted to draft, and changed his direction every few passes. I wanted to make a green/black deck, and drafted early green cards like Werebears and Rabid Elephant. He passed me a Scrivener and a Syncopate, so I felt sure he wasn't playing blue, and decided that my deck could use a strong trend of blue. It finally turned out that he was playing blue too (just a little, though). By that time, I built a green/blue/white deck, whose entire purpose was reaching Threshold and cast Threshold critters (Werebears, Healer, Seton's Desire). It also included a New Frontiers.

Round 1 : Andy Elant - Wiskonsin (the player sitting next to me!)
Game 1 : Amazingly enough, my deck worked! The blue got me into threshold very early, and the green brought on the critters. Rabid Elephant landed on the table, got Seton's Desired - and stomped all of Andy's critters into a bloody mush.
Game 2 : I cast New Frontiers in the middle of the game, and we both get to have 10 lands in play. Only, he's got a Mine Layer in play and a Puppeter, and he puts 2 mine counters on my lands every time I pass him the turn. I finally destroy all my lands by bringing into play 2 Werebears and an elephant, and even his Puppeter can stop the creature rush.

Round 2 : Luc Bourdean - Montreal.
The combo deck wins again - first time with an elephant + 2 Seton's Desire. The second game he got stuck with only 2 Islands, and I cast a Dreamwinder and a Werebear. You can't beat luck!

Round 3 : Kim Sommerset - Norway.
I offer Kim a split, since I know that my deck won't stand up to his ordinary power-up green-red deck. He's anxious for revenge for the last time I beat him, though, and won't accept it. I sit there, sighing, as his beat-up deck slaughters me with no effort.

That's second place - 4 boosters prize.
The judge, by the way, was Math Caplan - a jewish guy. He saw me reading Catch 22 in hebrew, and was pretty thrilled to see the language of the holy bible being used for such mundane writings :>
He received a box of boosters for his judging in the Ptq. Israelian Judges, pay attention!

THIRD (and last) DAY - SUNDAY

Today is another Sealed tourney, with a 1000$ prize. But first, let me to tell you of the top 8 feature match.
The feature match is played in a area surrounded by chairs and video cameras. Lots of people just sit all around the feature match area and watch the players. Near every 2 players sits a judge and a reporter that writes down every move they make and sends it to the net as soon as the match is finished.
The top 8 feature match is even hotter. Television screens are erected in front of the audience, and enable the audience to watch the games as though they were just above the tables. Two reporters (Kibler and another guys) talk about the match on tv, and exchange coments and criticisms about the games. Each person in the audience receives a headset of his own, that's tuned to the two reporters.
In the most famous feature match of the day, Kai Budde (4 times Pt champion) played with a Donate-Illusions deck against a Reanimator deck. He had 5 lands in play, no cards in hand and 20 life. The other guy had a Crosis in play, and was attacking with it. Budde already had 2 Illusions in the graveyard. This kind of situation is pretty hopeless, as you must hope to get both Illusions and Donate one after the other. If you get the Donate first, Crosis will just discard it from your hand.
Crosis attacks. Budde draws Illusions and casts them! He's now at 34 life. Crosis attacks and lowers him to 28. Budde pays the 2 mana upkeep, draws another card and passes the turn. Crosis attacks, and Budde reveals his hand : he got a land. Budde is now at 22. Budde doesn't pay the upkeep for the Illusions, since even if he pays it, he won't be able to cast the Donate (if he received it). He's down to 2 life, and draws a card. He lifts it very slowly... then slams down another Illusions! (the last one in the deck)
The audience goes mad, but Crosis attacks again, and Budde is down to 16 life. He pays the upkeep, draws Donate - and wins the game.
By the way, Budde won the Pro-Tour (his 5th pro-tour win) with that deck.

Back to the Sealed tourney.
I open a pretty balanced deck, consisting of 2 Springing Tigers, 2 Leaf Walkers and plenty of blue for threshold, Aether Burst and Dematerealize.

Round 1 : Kato Kazuki - Japan.
His deck is agressive green-red. Both games are almost exactly the same. He lays down big critters early on, kills my Leaf Walker, and starts attacking. In both games I receive a Chamber of Manipulation and stop his atack before it's starting. It's only a standstill for me, though, as I must discard each card I get. Obviously, it's not long before he has enough critters to swarm me with the Chamber or without.

Round 2 : Thomas Rosholm - Sweden.
In both games I manage to summon a Tiger or 2 early on, and reach Threshold on turn 5-6. He has some inadequate defenses, which don't really work against 5/5 critters. As a last ditch effort he brings a Sandstone Deadfall into play. I dematerealize it before the atack, and he concedes.

By the way, Dematerealize is much better than it seems. Yes, it's a sorcery, and yes, it costs like hell... But it kills tokens, can slow down an opponent by loading a land back to his hand, get rid of a blocker/critter-enchantment... It's a must against a green deck with tokens, and recommended against anything else, too.

Round 3 : Wessel Oomens - The Netherlands.
A very talented player with a defensive deck with 2 Blessed Orators, 2 Pianna, Nomad Captain... All he has to do is block, block, block - and then attack.
On both games he's casting Roar of the Wurm twice - into and from the graveyard. And both times I Dematerealize it twice. He wins first game, I win the second - but it takes us plenty of time to finish it, so we only have 6 minutes to finish the 3rd game. Neither of us wishes for a tie, so we must hurry up. The 3rd game is all about attack. He has an Embolden which gives him the edge, but I manage to bring him to 2 life. I have an egg in play, and he attacks. I have no blockers. He's going to kill me if his damage comes through. Desperately, I sacrifice my egg and draw a card, hoping for a Moment's Peace.
It was a land, but I threw it on the table and shouted 'Illusions!' :>
It's cool to end a game with style - even if you're on the wrong side of the table.

And that ended my hopes for the 1000$. (2 losses = no prize)


So... Let's draft!

I had a draft with 7 other people - a very strange draft. 3 of the people were rookies, and passed on some amazing cards. I received things like Mystic Zealot and Nantucko Disciple on rounds 8 and 9! My final deck had 2 Mongrels, 2 Zealots, 2 Leaf Walkers, -=3=- Seton's Desire, 2 Nantucko Disciple, 2 Second Thoughts, 2 Hounds... I didn't get any biggies, but 3 Seton's desire and 2 Disciples make any creature a fattie. The guy to the left of me built a red-green deck with 3 Muscle bursts, a Disciple, Mongrels... In short it was pretty scary.
One of the others built a Battle of Wits deck. He used 2 Battle of wits, and 248 lands. The idea was to just mulligan until you get a hand with Battle of Wits in it. The judge actually promised him a booster box if he managed to win just 1 game with the deck.
He didn't, though. Too bad.

Round 1 : Steven Fitzgerald - Carolina.
Steven is the guy who sat next to me - the one with the green-red deck. I saw his deck before the game, so I knew it was pretty good. But luck wasn't on his side, and on both games he was mana screwed. He never received more than 3 lands, and my little creatures, which 2 Seton's Desire made a lot bigger, shot him down.

Round 2 : Pierre Nalherbaog - France.
Game 1 : He plays a black/blue/green deck and manages to protect himself for several turns, using Puppteer. I have an Avenger and Zealot in play, and cast a Seton's Desire on both of them. I summon 2 Disciples, and then the fun really begins! He can't handle the fact that each critter can suddenly have 6 power, and just chump blocks and taps until he's out of creatures - and then he dies.
Game 2 : I lay down a Mongrel, Mystic visionary, a Nantucko Disciple, cast Seton's Desire - and he's got nothing big enough to stop the onslaught.

Round 3 : Johan Soldigpool - Sweden.
This guy has an incredible black/red deck with -=5=- Patriarch's desire. And I have nothing but weenies and 2 Zealots...
Game 1 : I get weenies, he gets 4 Desires in his hand. He slaughters my weenies by casting them every turn. I can't do anything to save my babies, and stay without critters. He then attacks with his own critters (a Limestone Golem and Chainflinger) to the win.
Game 2 : A very quick game - by the time he reaches 5th turn, my creatures are all over his dead body.
Game 3 : I kill his critters, and he kills mine. He's got 4 critters in play - Halbierdier, Crypt Creeper, Chainflinger (no threshold) and Whispering Shade. I have a Disciple in play. Next turn I get a Seton's Desire, cast it on the Nantucko Disciple and attack (has threshold). The purpose was to kill all of his creatures except one, and I had a Second thoughts in my hand for that left-alone critter. He just pinged my disciple for 1 with the Chainflinger, and the Halbierdier caused his first strike damage first. My Disciple died, his critters lived, and then I died.

Second place - 4 boosters.
